He passed the art of distilling to his son and then to his grandson, Colonel R.B. Hayden, who honored his grandfather by naming his justly famed whiskey Old Grand-Dad. During Prohibition, it was one of the few spirits permitted to be prescribed as medicine. Today it is made by the James B. Beam Distilling Co.

Old Grand-Dad is specifically formulated with more rye for a lighter, spicier flavor. The Bonded expression follows the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897: it is the product of one distillation season at one distillery, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled at 100 proof.

Expect caramel, vanilla and baking spice on the nose, a full, spicy palate of rye pepper, oak and dried fruit, and a long, warm finish.

Old Grand-Dad Bonded is a bartender favorite and a great value sipper. Enjoy it neat or on the rocks, or stir a classic Old Fashioned or Manhattan, where its high-rye spice and 100 proof strength stand up beautifully. It also makes a bold Whiskey Sour, a Boulevardier or a Kentucky Mule. Pair it with barbecue, smoked sausage, sharp cheddar or pecan pie. With its vintage orange label and Basil Hayden's portrait, Old Grand-Dad Bonded is a classic piece of American whiskey history and an easy gift for bourbon fans.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Caramel, vanilla, baking spice.

Palate: Full, rye pepper, oak, dried fruit.

Finish: Long and warm.

Specifications

Producer: James B.
