The combination of American oak and two styles of sherry cask gives the whisky both bright fruit and rich, dark depth.

It is a rich and complex whisky, with beautiful notes of dark chocolate, Black Forest gâteau, ripe cherries and sweet citrus, giving way to a rich, smooth and incredibly long finish.

Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand, and this single malt is a fine way to discover its growing whisky scene.

Presented in its box, it makes a distinctive gift for adventurous malt lovers.

First-fill casks are being used for whisky for the first time after holding bourbon or sherry, so they give the strongest flavour; Oloroso brings nutty dried fruit, and Pedro Ximénez adds rich, raisined sweetness.

Marrying the parcels back in cask lets the different flavours knit together before bottling, so the whisky tastes seamless rather than like separate parts.

New Zealand has a young but growing whisky scene, and single malts from the country are drawing increasing attention.

At 43%, it is easy to sip neat, and a drop of water brings out the citrus.

Tasting Notes

Character: Rich and complex.

Palate: Dark chocolate, Black Forest gâteau, ripe cherries and sweet citrus.

Finish: Rich, smooth and incredibly long.

Specifications

Producer: Pōkeno Whisky Company

Style: Single Malt Whisky

Cask / Finish: First-fill bourbon, Oloroso and PX casks, then married

Proof / ABV: 86 proof (43% ABV)

Region: Pōkeno, New Zealand

Size: 700ml, with box

How to Enjoy It

Sip it neat or with a drop of water.
