Amrut Peated Cask Strength is an Indian single malt whisky from Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore, bottled at cask strength of 62.8% ABV.
It is made from Scottish peated barley with approximately 23 ppm of peat content, then distilled and matured in Bangalore's extreme temperatures. The warm climate speeds up the interaction between spirit and oak, so the whisky gains depth in four to five years that would take far longer in a cooler climate.
The nose brings gristy smoked barley and kippers with salted butter and a peppered bite, alongside black pepper and lime. On the palate an intensely malty core meets sweet peat smoke, raisins, dried mango and honey, followed by drier oak. The finish is long, smoky and dry, softening into liquorice and molasses sugar.
Bottled at full strength, it rewards a few drops of water, which open up the fruit and sweetness beneath the smoke. It is a fine gift for peat lovers ready to explore beyond Scotland.
Enjoy it neat or with a splash of water.
Cask strength means the whisky goes into the bottle at the strength it reaches in the cask, without being diluted to a standard bottling strength, so every drop carries the full weight of the spirit and the oak. Peat levels are measured in phenol parts per million, or ppm, and the higher the number, the smokier the barley that goes into the mash.
