Arette Artesanal Gran Clase is an extra añejo tequila made by the Orendain family at Destilería El Llano in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. Made from 100% blue Weber agave, crushed by tahona, it is aged for at least three years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 40% ABV.
The Orendain brothers are tequila royalty, from one of the oldest tequila families, and El Llano is a small, traditional distillery. Gran Clase is made in very limited quantities, only about twenty barrels a year, and each bottle is hand-decorated and numbered.
Expect rich cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, dried fruit and toasted American oak on the nose. The palate has a wonderful viscosity, carrying malty sweetness with salted caramel, cedar wood, bright citrus and a spicy pepper finish, and the finish is exceptionally long and smooth, with warm, velvety notes of oak and vanilla.
The hand-decorated bottle with its horse emblem and wax seal makes it a refined gift.
Sip it neat to appreciate its depth.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
