Bozal Ensamble is a mezcal artesanal from Oaxaca blending cultivated Espadín with two wild-harvested magueys, Barril and Mexicano, bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV).

Bozal works with multiple mezcaleros in the Miahuatlán and Etla regions of Oaxaca. Using two wild agaves alongside Espadín gives a layered spirit with striking complexity, yet it remains a light, easy-sipping mezcal that will delight and surprise you with its long, complex finish.

It is a layered, smoke-forward mezcal. It earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast and a Gold medal at the 2021 Bartender Spirits Awards.

Its textured, paper-wrapped bottle is a beautiful object and a memorable gift.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.

An ensamble blends more than one agave species, combining the familiar sweetness of Espadín with the more unusual flavors of wild varieties.

Wild magueys take many years to mature in the mountains and are harvested by hand, which makes them prized and scarce.

Mezcal artesanal is roasted in earthen pits and distilled in small batches, which gives its characteristic smoke.
