Bozal Tobasiche is a single-maguey joven mezcal made from wild Tobasiche agave in small batches by Bozal's family mezcaleros, bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV).
On the steep, precarious hillsides of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Durango, indigenous agaves grow wild and are heavily sought after by local mezcaleros; Bozal, Spanish for wild or untamed, believes that something wild produces a far richer spirit. Tobasiche is a subspecies of the Karwinskii family, a tall, columnar wild agave that needs twelve to thirteen years to fully mature, typically showing herbaceous, cedar-like aromatics with an earthy finish.
With an unconventional sweet nose, this mezcal shows traces of quince, anise and strong minerality, complemented by rich herbaceous botanicals on the finish.
Presented in Bozal's distinctive ceramic-style bottle, it makes a fine gift for mezcal explorers.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
