Creyente Mezcal Joven Cuishe is a single-varietal joven mezcal from Oaxaca made from wild Agave karwinskii, known as cuishe, and bottled at 40% ABV.
Creyente sources wild-harvested cuishe from both the Valles Centrales and Sierra Sur regions of Oaxaca, selecting plants that have matured for years in rugged highland terrain. The hearts are slow-roasted in traditional underground earthen pits, which gives the spirit its foundational smoke, and then distilled in copper pot stills. Unlike Creyente's standard joven, which blends agaves, this expression isolates the cuishe so its leaner, more herbaceous personality can stand on its own.
Creyente was launched in 2016 by Casa Cuervo. The Cuishe won a Gold medal at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge and Gold at the 2024 ASCOT Awards.
Its illustrated label and green-capped bottle make it a handsome gift for anyone exploring wild agave.
Sip it slowly from a copita, or use it to add a herbal, smoky edge to a cocktail.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
