Espolòn Añejo is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from the Highlands of Jalisco, aged 10 months in new American oak barrels and finished for two months in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Inspired by and a tribute to Mexican culture, Espolòn is named for the spur of the iconic rooster, a historic symbol of strength, nobility and national pride, and was established in 1998 as a tequila for the people. Crafted at the San Nicolás distillery in Los Altos, its piñas are slow roasted, and the Añejo starts as a blanco before its time in new oak and heavily charred bourbon barrels, taking on the rich, complex flavors of a whiskey.
Medium to full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel, it shows caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and even chocolate, with toasted oak and baking spice, finishing long and warm with lingering vanilla and gentle pepper.
The Día de los Muertos label art makes it a striking gift.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
