Fundador Supremo 18 is a Solera Gran Reserva Brandy de Jerez from Spain's oldest brandy house, aged for 18 years in rare sherry casks and bottled at 40% ABV. It was named the world's best brandy at the 2019 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Fundador, founded in Jerez de la Frontera in 1730, makes its Supremo range of Solera Gran Reserva brandies in the traditional solera system, in which older brandies are gradually blended with younger ones over many years. The Sherry Cask Collection matures each expression in casks that previously held fine sherry, with the 18-year-old at the top of the range, and this bottle is the generous one-litre size.
It is aromatic, warm and round, with dried fruit and roasted nuts, and smooth, intense hints of vanilla, walnuts and dried fruit. Raisins, figs, dark chocolate and caramel join cocoa and sweet spice, giving a rich, layered brandy built for slow sipping.
The squared decanter with its gold Fundador crest is presented in a burgundy box with a gold medallion, making it an elegant gift.
Enjoy it neat in a snifter after dinner, perhaps with a cigar or a piece of dark chocolate.
