Linie Aquavit is Norway's famous aquavit, matured at sea in oak sherry casks on a voyage that crosses the equator twice, bottled at 83 proof (41.5% ABV) in a 700ml bottle.
Linie is named for the line, the equator, which every batch crosses twice on its voyage to the other side of the world and back. The tradition dates back more than 200 years. It is produced by Lysholm in Norway.
The spirit is distilled from potatoes and flavored with caraway and other Nordic herbs and spices, then aged in Oloroso sherry casks. The casks spend about four months at sea, where the motion of the waves and the changing climate deepen the interaction between spirit and wood.
Expect caraway, star anise and citrus peel on the nose, a smooth, rounded palate of caraway, dill and vanilla from the sherry oak, and a warm, gently spicy finish.
Linie is traditionally served at cool room temperature in a small tulip glass alongside Scandinavian food: pickled herring, gravlax, smoked fish, roast pork and Christmas dishes. It also makes an excellent aquavit Negroni, a Bloody Mary with a Nordic twist, or a refreshing highball with tonic and a slice of cucumber. A splash with ginger beer and lime is easy and bright.
