MacNair's Lum Reek 21 Year Old is a small-batch peated blended malt created by legendary master blender Billy Walker for the GlenAllachie Distillers Company. Built around peated Islay and Speyside malts with GlenAllachie single malt, and matured in oloroso, virgin oak and red wine casks, it is bottled at 48% ABV.
The MacNair's range pays tribute to Victorian distiller Harvey MacNair, and Lum Reek comes from the traditional Scottish toast Lang may yer lum reek, long may your chimney smoke. At 21 years old, the peat has softened into an elegant, atmospheric smoke that sits gracefully alongside rich fruit.
On the nose come aristocratic peat smoke with dark chocolate and fudge, tobacco leaves, cedar, raisin, toffee and vanilla. The palate brings tobacco, leather and cedar with cocoa, vanilla, honey and spice, along with peach, marmalade, berries and dark chocolate. The finish is medium to long, ashy and spicy, with lingering cocoa.
The bottle wears a dark, illustrated label and comes in a matching tube, and it has won a string of international awards. A teaspoon of water helps it open up.
It is a superb gift for a peat lover and a fine bottle for collectors of Billy Walker's work.
