Mico Añejo is a tequila aged an average of 15 months in premium small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey barrels and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Using ex-bourbon barrels from Kentucky gives the añejo a warm amber color and a bourbon-like layer of vanilla, caramel and oak over the cooked agave. Mico's range also includes an extra añejo aged for years in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Cabernet barrels.
Añejo, or aged, tequila must rest at least one year in oak containers of no more than 600 liters, which is why it is often enjoyed like a fine whiskey or cognac. Fifteen months puts Mico comfortably in the category, long enough to round and deepen the spirit while keeping the agave present.
The rounded bottle with its bold red label makes it a lively gift.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
Kentucky straight bourbon barrels are made of new charred American oak for their first use, so they carry strong vanilla and caramel into a tequila.
An añejo is best sipped slowly, where its oak and agave can open in the glass.
