Salvadores Tepeztate is a joven artisanal mezcal from Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca, distilled by mezcalero Flavio Pérez Méndez from wild Agave marmorata and bottled at 48% ABV (96 proof).
Tepeztate is one of the slowest-growing agaves in Oaxaca, and its piñas are prized for a bold green, vegetal character. Salvadores cooks them in an underground pit oven, crushes them with a stone tahona, ferments with open-air yeasts and double distils in copper stills, bottling the spirit unaged so the agave speaks for itself.
The profile is crystal clear, fresh, very herbal and floral, creamy and slightly citric and tropical, with aromas of pine, fresh green herbs and an aromatic note of jalapeño pepper, finishing long with a slight smoky touch.
The minimalist textured label makes it a refined gift for mezcal lovers.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
