Compass Box Metropolis is the third release in The Extinct Blends Quartet, a series recreating the spirit of long-lost blended Scotch whiskies. Created by lead whiskymaker James Saxon as a tribute to a city's bustling streets across its history, it is bottled at 49% ABV, non-chill filtered and with natural colour.
Metropolis draws inspiration from a well-respected, malt-rich blend whose production ended around a decade ago. To recreate its character, Compass Box built the whisky mainly around 30-year-old Aberlour, with dashes of 24-year-old Bowmore and 29-year-old Miltonduff, alongside blended Scotch and grain whisky.
The nose offers vanilla first, followed by a medley of honeys, then fudge, apricot and pineapple leading to fresh fig, with sultana and soft oak spice. The palate is slightly waxy in texture, and the finish is warming, toasty and fruity, with a thread of clean smoke.
The label is a detailed engraving of a grand city facade, and the bottle comes in a kraft presentation box with the same artwork. It was released in limited numbers and is a prized part of any Extinct Blends collection.
With its rare, long-aged components, Metropolis is a beautiful bottle to open on a special occasion.
