Teeling 16 Year Old Marsala Cask is the second release in the Phoenix Legends series, a limited collaboration between Teeling Whiskey and the University of Notre Dame. This single malt Irish whiskey spent about 14 years in ex-bourbon barrels before a two-year finish in Marsala casks from Sicily, and it is bottled at 46% ABV. Only 1,500 bottles were made.
The release commemorates the famous 1977 Green Jersey Game, when Notre Dame surprised its fans by switching into green jerseys and beat USC 49-19. Teeling, whose phoenix emblem symbolises the rebirth of distilling in Dublin, has partnered with Notre Dame to create whiskeys that celebrate the university's Irish heritage and its legendary moments.
The long years in ex-bourbon barrels are followed by two years in casks that held Marsala, the fortified wine of Sicily, an unusual finish for Irish whiskey and the defining feature of this release.
The bottle is a rounded decanter with a gold 16 seal and a green band bearing the Notre Dame monogram and the bottle's number out of 1,500, presented in a green and navy box. It is a must for Notre Dame fans and a fine gift for any collector of Irish whiskey.
