Wolves Malted Barley Series Lot One is a seven-year-old American single malt, distilled in 2015 by Master Distiller Marko Karakasevic and bottled at 110 proof. It is dressed in the series' signature black, hand-wrapped sheepskin label, which gives it its nickname, Black Leather.
Lot One was made from two-row pale malted barley fermented with California ale yeast and distilled in a pot still, with Karakasevic making each cut himself. It aged in American oak charred to six different levels, and in 2022 eleven of the twelve barrels were blended and bottled together, for a release of about 4,000 bottles.
On the nose come honey, grapefruit and vanilla, and the palate brings maple syrup, currants and leather, with dark chocolate and port-like fruit adding depth. It is a bold, rich single malt best enjoyed at full strength.
As the first release of the Malted Barley Series, Lot One is a landmark bottle for Wolves and a prized find for collectors of American single malt. The twelfth barrel from the lot, number 574, was bottled on its own as a single barrel at 125 proof, so this eleven-barrel blend is the main expression of Lot One.
