Stratheden Vintage is a blended malt Scotch whisky from The Lost Distillery Company, created to recapture the style of the Stratheden distillery, which operated from 1829 to 1926 in the centre of the old market town of Auchtermuchty in Fife. It is bottled at 46% ABV, the higher strength used for the company's Vintage range.
The Lost Distillery Company researches Scotland's silent distilleries, studying their barley, water, stills and casks, and then blends malt whiskies to recreate what their spirit might have tasted like. Stratheden is one of these lost names, and the Vintage expression uses older whiskies than the company's Classic range, which is bottled at 43%.
The nose is dense, leathery, spicy and fruity, with dried fruit cake, Madeira cake with maraschino cherries and tinned pears, plus pastry, hard toffee and sweet tobacco. The palate is surprisingly sweet and peppery, malty and finely sweet, with dark bread, honey, orange, apple, raisin and toffee and a trace of salt and smoke. The finish is long, warm and spicy, with hints of dried fruit.
The dark bottle with its pale cap and archival label comes in a black presentation box, a nod to the history it recreates.
It is a fascinating bottle for anyone interested in Scotch whisky's lost history.
