Dewar's Double Double 38 Year Old is the second release in Dewar's Collector's Series, a run of ultra-aged, strictly limited blended malts that climbs one year at a time. Built only from single malts aged at least 38 years and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, it comes in a striking black 375ml bottle with a copper label, a compact format that makes such a rare whisky easier to open and share.

Unlike Dewar's famous blended Scotch, this is a blended malt: there is no grain whisky in it at all. Dewar's master blender Stephanie Macleod brought together single malts from the Highland and Island regions of Scotland, each individually aged for a minimum of 38 years. The blend also includes an allotment of the previous year's Double Double 37 Year Old, carrying the series forward from one release to the next.

The label describes the whisky as aged four times. Its final stage took place in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks that had previously aged Royal Brackla Single Malt, a tribute to the Upper Highlands. The PX casks bring rich dried fig and plum to the long-aged malts. This 375ml bottling is bottled at 48.8% ABV, as printed on its label.

Tasting Notes

  • Palate: Rich dried fruit and sherry sweetness, with the depth of long-aged Highland and Island malts.
  • Finish: Long, with dried fig, plum and soft oak.

How to Enjoy It

Pour a small measure neat into a nosing glass and give it time: very old malts reveal layer after layer as they breathe. At 48.8% ABV, a drop of water can open up more fruit. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, dates or a mild cigar. The 375ml bottle makes it a rare and memorable gift for a whisky lover who has tried everything.
