The Last Drop 1968 Glenrothes Cask 13508 is a single cask Speyside malt distilled in 1968 and matured for around half a century before The Last Drop Distillers bottled it at natural cask strength. Cask 13508 yielded just 141 bottles, making it one of the rarest Glenrothes bottlings a collector can own.

The Last Drop Distillers specialises in finding and releasing extraordinary old whiskies that might otherwise never be bottled. This release paired two Glenrothes casks, 13504 and 13508, which were filled on the same day in 1968 at the distillery in Rothes and lay maturing side by side for nearly fifty years. Together they produced only 309 bottles, and each cask was bottled separately so that its own character could be compared with its twin.

Both casks were ex-bourbon casks, which let the fruit and herbal character of the Glenrothes spirit lead rather than heavy sherry influence. Cask 13508 was bottled at 50.2% ABV without reduction, and the whisky has an oily texture and remarkable vitality for its age. Each bottle is presented in The Last Drop's signature red case with a 50ml miniature replica and a pocket-sized, leather-bound tasting book with notes by whisky writer Charles Maclean.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Complex and mellow, at once fruity and herbal, with an elusive whiff of scented smoke, cigar boxes and, in time, candlewax.
  • Palate: Oily in texture and sweet at first, then a touch of saltiness and peppery spice.
  • Finish: Long, with a cool, mentholic aftertaste.

How to Enjoy It

Pour it neat and give it time: the smoke, cigar-box and candlewax notes emerge slowly. A few drops of water soften the cask strength and lift the fruit. The cigar-box character makes it a natural partner for a mild, aged cigar, and the miniature lets you keep a taste for a future occasion. It is an exceptional gift for someone born in 1968.
