1509 Tepeztate is an artisanal joven mezcal made from 100% maguey tepeztate, bottled at 48% ABV under the 1509 'El Principio del Fin' label.
The label's name, 'The First Omen of Montezuma', recalls the comet said to have foretold the fall of the Aztec empire in 1509.
As a joven, it is bottled unaged, so the agave's own character comes through clearly.
Tepeztate is a wild agave that can take decades to mature, prized for a bold, green and spicy character.
The illustrated label shows a Mexican landscape with agave and a ruined temple, and names the agave on every bottle. 1509 Tepeztate is a fine bottle for exploring wild agaves beyond espadín.
