40 Acres Straight Rye is a high-rye (95%) straight rye whiskey finished in Oregon wine barrels, created by New Deal Distillery distiller Karl Rohdin-Bibby and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
40 Acres comes from Karl Rohdin-Bibby, an avid whiskey enthusiast and distiller at Portland's New Deal Distillery. Inspired by New Deal's DIY spirit and the creative nature of his job, he started his own brand to further experiment, educate and create. Its first release is an enticing straight rye made from 95% rye and finished in Oregon wine barrels, a finish that brings out new flavor combinations in the spicy rye, part of the rise of Pacific Northwest rye whiskey.
The Oregon wine-barrel finish layers its own character over the bold spice of a 95% rye.
The bright coral label with its mule and wheat makes it a standout gift.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Straight rye must age at least two years in new charred oak.
A 95% rye mash gives bold, spicy character.
Wine-barrel finishing is a short second maturation that adds depth.
Serve it neat in a Glencairn glass.
A splash of water opens up the aromas.
Pour it over a large ice cube for slow sipping.
It makes a lively Manhattan with sweet vermouth.
Try it in a Sazerac with an absinthe rinse.
It also works in a Rye Old Fashioned.
It is a fun gift for fans of Pacific Northwest craft spirits.
