A. Overholt Monongahela Mash is a four-year-old straight rye whiskey made from Abraham Overholt's original mash bill of 80% rye and 20% malted barley, bottled non-chill filtered at 95 proof (47.5% ABV).
The name looks back to the Monongahela Valley of Pennsylvania, where whiskey farmers like Abraham Overholt made a distinctive corn-free style of rye. Overholt rye was always made in Pennsylvania, and Monongahela Mash returns the brand to its roots: a high-rye, corn-free mash, Pennsylvania-sourced rye grain and non-chill filtration that preserves the texture and flavor oils of the whiskey.
The nose is sweet and sharp, oaky and fruity, with brown sugar, nutmeg and butterscotch alongside rye-driven mint and floral notes and touches of cherry and orange. On the palate, floral notes give way to molasses sweetness and cinnamon-laced rye spice, and the long, warming finish closes with clove and dry oak.
A taste of what American rye was like before Prohibition.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Old Monongahela rye was traditionally made with a ratio of four parts rye to one part malted barley, the same proportion found in this mash, and the result is a rye with more floral lift and less corn sweetness than the Kentucky style.
The finish can also show dry herbs such as dill and sage alongside sweet notes of cinnamon and honey.
