Arran Sherry Cask The Bodega is a cask strength island single malt Scotch whisky matured entirely in sherry casks at the Isle of Arran's Lochranza Distillery, bottled at 55.8% ABV without chill filtration.
It is a return to the style of the earliest Arran single malts, which were mostly matured in sherry casks. Arran's Master Distiller worked with producers in the most prestigious sherry bodegas of Jerez, Spain, to select first-fill European oak sherry hogsheads seasoned with Oloroso for filling with Arran spirit. The Bodega is the partner to Arran's Quarter Cask, The Bothy.
Luxurious and elegant, it has layers of rich sweet spice and oak: dried fruits, dark chocolate, spiced orange peel and toasted oak on the nose, then raisins, figs, dark caramel, cinnamon, clove and roasted nuts over malt sweetness.
A full-sherry cask strength malt, it makes an impressive gift.
Sip it neat, then add a few drops of water.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
Oloroso is a rich, nutty style of sherry aged in contact with air; European oak casks that held it lend dried fruit, walnut and warm spice.
A hogshead is a mid-sized cask of around 250 litres, giving a good balance between wood influence and steady maturation.
The Isle of Arran sits in the Firth of Clyde, and its Lochranza distillery, opened in 1995, was the first legal distillery on the island in more than 150 years.
