AsomBroso Gran Reserva 5 Year is an extra añejo tequila made from 100% blue agave and aged for five years in new French oak barrels. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
Five years in new French oak gives the tequila a body often compared to an aged cognac or Armagnac. It has been named Best of the Best by Robb Report and awarded top tequila at the World Spirits Competition.
The nose is sweet, delicate and honey-like. The palate brings more honey with vanilla, buttercream and toffee, yielding to a smooth caramel finish.
The dark gourd-shaped bottle with its gold medallion and script is a striking piece and a luxurious gift.
Serve it neat in a snifter, as you would a fine cognac.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
