Banhez Arroqueño Joven is a 100% arroqueño agave mezcal artesanal from the Banhez co-operative in Oaxaca, bottled at 47% ABV.
Arroqueño is an enormous agave that can take up to 25 years to reach full maturity and is found only in rural Oaxaca. This mezcal is made by maestro mezcalero Apolonio Patricio López.
Banhez is produced by Integradora Comercial de Ejutla, a co-operative of more than 35 families in San Miguel Ejutla, Oaxaca, committed to sustainable, fair-trade mezcal made as it has been for nearly two centuries: cooked in underground wood-fired pits, crushed with donkey-pulled stone tahonas, fermented in wooden tanks and distilled in small copper batches.
It is earthy and dark, with subtle smoke and an underlying sweetness.
Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
