Banhez Jabalí is an artisanal joven mezcal made from wild maguey Jabalí by the Banhez cooperative of Ejutla in Oaxaca's central valleys. It is bottled at 47% ABV.

The Banhez cooperative unites more than 35 families of farmers and mezcaleros in and around San Miguel Ejutla, sharing resources so that each can make mezcal the traditional way: roasting agave in earthen, wood-fired ovens lined with brick and stone, crushing it with a horse-drawn tahona, fermenting naturally and distilling in small batches. This Jabalí is made by an individual mezcalero within the co-op.

Jabalí is a notoriously difficult agave to distil, and the reward is a citric, light-bodied mezcal with a lively mouthfeel. Banhez describes notes of lactose, wet stone, fermented fruit and herbaceous conifers, leaning toward subtlety and complexity rather than smoke and heat, with vanilla cola, grass and perfumed aromas.

The simple label with its pink accents makes it a thoughtful gift for agave enthusiasts.

Sip it slowly from a copita.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
