Basil Hayden Golden Rye is a Kentucky rye whiskey crafted with 100% malted rye and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), now a permanent core expression alongside the original Basil Hayden bourbon.
Released in 2026 as the evolution of Basil Hayden Malted Rye, first introduced in 2024, Golden Rye is part of a new portfolio that narrows the core lineup to two whiskeys. It focuses on a lighter, brighter profile that bridges traditional rye spice and bourbon sweetness. The use of malted rye makes it notably smooth and approachable compared to standard high-spice ryes, with a soft, inviting character and a golden hue.
It opens with sweet vanilla, warm cinnamon and toasted rye bread balanced with delicate floral notes. Toffee, sweet rye grain and brown butter fill the palate, and the finish adds an iced-tea note with light cinnamon and a gentle rye-spice pop.
The cream-and-copper label makes it an elegant gift.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Malted rye gives a softer, bready character than unmalted rye.
A large ice cube opens up its vanilla and cinnamon.
It makes a gentle Sazerac with absinthe rinse and Peychaud's bitters.
Try it in a Brown Derby-style highball with grapefruit.
It is an easy introduction for drinkers new to rye.
