Basil Hayden is a high-rye Kentucky straight bourbon distilled in Clermont, Kentucky, and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) for a gentle, spicy, approachable pour.
Created by Booker Noe in 1992 as part of Jim Beam's Small Batch Bourbon Collection, it is named after Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Maryland farmer who moved to Kentucky and became known for distilling with a higher-than-typical share of rye. Basil Hayden uses twice as much rye as the other bourbons in the collection, the same high-rye recipe found in Old Grand-Dad, giving it a gentle yet spicy flavor. The label was refreshed in 2022 with a redesigned BH buckle around the bottle.
Rich hints of peppermint, notes of pepper and slight citrus overtones lead to a spicy, warming finish, with a honey-toned light body and gentle bite.
The copper belt and cream label make it a polished gift.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
