Basil Hayden Malted Rye is a permanent Basil Hayden expression made from a 100% malted rye mash bill, bringing an entirely new flavour profile to the rye category, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Malting gently transforms the spicy character rye is known for, mellowing it out. The grain is steeped in water to begin germination and then kiln-dried, a process familiar from single malt Scotch and craft beer but rare in American rye. The result is an unexpected softness and approachability, with the mellow spice complemented by gentle sweet and floral notes.
Delicate sweet and floral notes lead into a taste of cinnamon, sweet vanilla and toasted rye bread, and the finish brings delicate chocolate and warm spice. Launched in 1992, Basil Hayden is one of four brands in Booker Noe's Small Batch Bourbon Collection, made at the James B. Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky.
Soft and approachable, it makes a welcome gift for any whiskey drinker.
Serve it neat as the first sip of any occasion.
