Benriach The Smoky Ten is a 10-year-old Speyside single malt Scotch whisky made from a combination of peated and unpeated spirit and three cask matured in bourbon barrels, Jamaican rum casks and toasted virgin oak. It is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
Benriach was established by John Duff in 1898 on the site of Riach farm in the north of Speyside. In the early 1970s it broke convention in the region by returning to distilling batches of whisky in the old 19th-century style, using malted barley smoked with wood-rich Highland peat, which gives distinctly sweet and smoky notes to its peated whiskies.
Three-cask maturation brings out intense smoked applewood with honeyed sugar maple, woven together with rich layers of smoke. The colour is bright gold. The nose shows ripe orchard fruit syrup, smoked honey glaze and oak spice, and the palate brings smoked applewood, honey maple and spiced pear, finishing with lingering fruit and smoked oak. It won a Double Gold medal at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Presented in its tube, it is the perfect introduction to the smokier side of Benriach and a fine gift.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
