Peat Barreled Big Gin is a barrel-rested gin from Captive Spirits in Seattle, its flagship Big Gin aged in casks that previously held peated single malt whisky, bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV).
Captive Spirits makes Big Gin and its barrel-aged variants in Seattle, among the shipyards of the Ballard neighborhood, in three 100-gallon Vendôme pot stills. Peat Barreled Big Gin was the distillery's third release, alongside a Bourbon Barreled version, and it bridges the gap between London Dry gin and peated whisky.
The flagship Big Gin rests for about four months in barrels that previously held intensely smoky peated single malt whisky. The barrel and bottle numbers are hand-written on each label, a mark of the small-batch work behind every release. Big Gin itself grew from a Seattle favorite into a gin distributed in more than two dozen states.
The result is earthy and resinous, with a twinge of bitter orange and warm spices over the juniper backbone, and a gentle smokiness from the peated barrels.
Try it in a smoky Martinez or a Negroni, in a Penicillin in place of Scotch, or sip it on a large ice cube. It is a natural crossover for whisky drinkers who love peat. A splash of tonic and an orange twist bring out the bitter orange, and it stands up beautifully to sweet vermouth and Campari in a smoky twist on the Boulevardier.
