Blinking Owl California Straight Bourbon is a grain-to-glass straight bourbon from Blinking Owl Distillery in Santa Ana, Orange County's first craft distillery, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Blinking Owl was founded in 2016 by local residents Brian and Robin Christenson and is named after a mid-century Santa Ana bar whose neon blinking owl sign signalled thirsty patrons to the watering hole. All of the grain the distillery uses is certified organic and sourced within California, and everything is made in house.
The distillery sits in a warm micro-climate along the Santa Ana River, where temperatures inside routinely top 100 degrees.
A proud taste of Southern California craft, it makes a fine gift for bourbon explorers.
Sip it neat or in an Old Fashioned.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Straight bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged at least two years in new charred oak containers, with nothing added but water; it can be made anywhere in the country, not only Kentucky.
Grain-to-glass means the distillery handles every step itself, from milling the grain to bottling the whiskey.
Organic grain is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, and sourcing it within California keeps the whiskey tied to its home state.
At 90 proof, it is easy to sip neat yet full enough to stand up in cocktails.
