Bozal Cempasúchil Reserva is a limited ancestral mezcal inspired by Día de los Muertos, made from 100% Espadín agave by Marcelino Ortiz in Etla, Oaxaca, and bottled at 47% ABV.
The agaves are crushed by mallet and distilled in clay pots, the ancestral way. During distillation, marigold flowers, the cempasúchil that guides spirits home on the Day of the Dead, and mandarin peels are added directly to the still, lending the mezcal a delicate floral and citrus character.
Bright aromas of citrus, late-season florals and a touch of baking spice, particularly allspice, lead to a palate of green pepper, orange zest, nutmeg and anise, with agave, honey and river stone on an unctuous palate and a floral aftertaste.
The striking black bottle with its white floral design makes it a beautiful gift and an ideal bottle for a Día de los Muertos celebration.
Sip it slowly from a copita, perhaps with orange slices.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
