Bunnahabhain Fèis Ìle 2024 is a 14-year-old Islay single malt distilled in 2009, matured for 11 years in bourbon casks and then finished for three years in Ruby Port hogsheads. Unpeated, non-chill filtered and with natural colour, it is bottled at 58.7% ABV.
Each year Bunnahabhain releases special bottlings for Fèis Ìle, the Islay Festival of Music and Malt, and this Ruby Port finish was one of its two releases for 2024, alongside a 23-year-old triple sherry finish. The spirit began maturing on 26 May 2009 and moved into Ruby Port hogsheads on 17 November 2020.
An initial burst of dark chocolate on the nose fades to reveal toasted oak, cherries, plums and raspberries, with a hint of caramelised walnut. The palate is spicy yet sweet, with cinnamon and nutmeg intertwined with pain au chocolat, redcurrant, pomegranate and sweet malt, and the finish is long, with cocoa and spice.
The bottle carries Bunnahabhain's classic helmsman emblem with the Fèis Ìle 2024 label. It is a collectable for Islay enthusiasts and a superb gift.
At cask strength, a few drops of water open up the berries and chocolate.
