Burnside Buckman RSV is a 10-year-old bourbon finished in Oregon oak by Eastside Distilling in Portland, Oregon, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
It celebrates Eastside's 10th anniversary of production in Portland's Buckman neighborhood. The distillery sourced some of the best aged bourbons in the country and mellowed them in second-generation, heavily charred Quercus garryana (Oregon white oak) casks, a very uncommon practice that stamps the whisky with Oregon's unique fingerprint. The label sums it up: reared in the South, tamed in the West.
It shows a rich dark umber, henna color, with bold spiced fruit bread, citrus and peppercorn, and faint aromatics of apple and wood.
It is a distinctive gift for bourbon fans who like to explore regional finishes.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Ten years of age gives the bourbon a deep, rounded base before the Oregon oak adds its signature.
A few drops of water bring out the citrus and apple.
It makes a spicy, rich Old Fashioned.
Collectors of regional American whiskey will find it a fascinating bottle.
Pair it with a slice of spiced fruit bread to echo its notes.
