Caisteal Chamuis is a heavily peated blended malt Scotch whisky from Mossburn Distillers, made from island single malts and finished in first-fill bourbon barrels, bottled without coloring or chill filtration at 92 proof (46% ABV).
Launched in 2021 and produced at Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, it is named after Castle Camus, the medieval ruins just beyond the distillery's doors; Caisteal Chamuis is the Gaelic name. In a traditional Hebridean style, it blends heavily peated single malts distilled on the Scottish islands, including Islay, Orkney and Skye malts.
The malts are first aged in refill and first-fill American oak hogsheads, then blended and finished in smaller 200-liter fresh bourbon barrels. That double-barreled finish adds fragrant smoky oak and softens the medicinal peat, making it heavily peated yet remarkably smooth. Earthy peat smoke turns ashy on the palate, with creamy vanilla, brine, lemon-lime, charred oak, black pepper and heather, and a long, sweet, slightly drying finish.
It is an accessible gateway to peated whisky and a fine gift.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
