Calle 23 Reposado is a highland tequila from Los Altos de Jalisco, double distilled in traditional pot stills and rested eight months in ex-bourbon oak casks. It is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) in a 700ml bottle.
Calle 23 is the creation of Sophie Decobecq, a French-born biochemist and engineer who moved to Mexico in 1999 and stepped, little by little, into the world of tequila. She is the brand's master distiller, and Calle 23 is one of the few tequilas overseen by a woman. Its goal is to express agave flavors at their best, hence the motto, "Agave you my heart."
The eight-month rest gives a light amber, medium-bodied tequila with a subtle balance between agave and wood spice, without losing its freshness. Light hints of wood come through on the nose, but cooked agave plays the major role. The palate is light and smooth, the wood adds spiciness, and notes of roasted peppers and fresh figs complete it.
It is a characterful, easygoing gift for tequila fans.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
