Cantera Negra Extra Añejo is a 100% agave tequila aged no less than 36 months in bourbon and cognac casks and bottled at 40% ABV.
Cantera Negra artfully blends bourbon-cask and cognac-cask aged tequila for a sophisticated taste, and like every Cantera Negra expression it is bottled only after passing the stringent tasting standards of the family panel.
Rich and buttery smooth from start to finish, it drinks like a bourbon-lover's tequila, with notes of caramel, honey, chocolate and coffee.
It makes a great sipping drink with dessert; paired with dark chocolate, it is an outstanding experience, and a handsome gift for any aged-spirits lover.
Sip it neat, slowly, at room temperature.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
Bourbon casks bring vanilla, caramel and toasted oak to aged tequila, while cognac casks add dried fruit, spice and a softer, rounder sweetness. Marrying the two gives this extra añejo the depth that makes it so easy to compare with a fine whiskey.
