Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is the classic Caribbean spiced rum, a secret blend with subtle notes of vanilla and caramel for a smooth, medium-bodied taste, bottled at 70 proof (35% ABV) in a 1.75-liter handle.
The brand takes its name from Sir Henry Morgan, the 17th-century Welsh privateer of the Caribbean who went on to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. The rum itself began in Jamaica in 1944, when the Seagram Company started producing rum under the Captain Morgan name; in the early 1940s, Seagram's Samuel Bronfman had bought the Long Pond distillery, and a Kingston pharmacy, the Levy Brothers, infused the rum with herbs and spices.
Original Spiced Rum was introduced to the United States in 1984 and was an instant hit, thanks in part to its pirate-emblazoned label. Diageo has owned the brand since 2001, and production moved from Jamaica to Puerto Rico and then to St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, where the rum is distilled from molasses. Today it is the number-one selling spiced rum in North America and, for decades, the de facto entry point to spiced rum.
Caribbean rum is blended with vanilla, spice and other natural flavors for a spiced, smooth finish. Expect vanilla and caramelized sugar with cinnamon, clove, dried fruit and honey, sweeter than most rums and gluten-free.
Built for mixing, it is perfect with cola and a squeeze of lime, in a rum punch or a Long Island Iced Tea. The 1.75L handle is the party size, ready for a crowd.
