Casamigos Mezcal Joven is a 100% espadín mezcal from Oaxaca, made the traditional way with pit-roasted agave and a horse-drawn tahona, bottled at 40% ABV, here in the 1-litre format.
Casamigos, co-founded by George Clooney and Rande Gerber, uses espadín agave grown for eight to nine years in Oaxaca. The piñas are split and cooked for four to six days in six-ton earthen pits lined with volcanic rock, cooled for a day and crushed one ton at a time by a horse-drawn tahona, then fermented for two to eight days, depending on the season, before distillation.
Balanced and elegant, it offers tamarind, pomegranate, banana and mango, with fresh herbal mint, dried oregano and thyme. Delicate smoke, hints of liquorice and mineral nuances lead to a long, silky finish.
A smooth introduction to mezcal, it makes a fine gift.
Enjoy it neat, over ice, or as a smoky twist in a favourite cocktail.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
