Catedral de Mi Padre Espadín is a joven mezcal artesanal from the mountains outside Oaxaca City, double-distilled in copper pots from 100% Espadín agave and bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
Catedral de Mi Padre was launched in 2022 by the father-daughter duo Jeff and Sydney Block, who lived in Oaxaca for eight years and fell for the way mezcal connects religion, culture and family. Their California-based brand partners with six maestros mezcaleros, and a portion of the brand's stock is pledged to a community nonprofit for the families who make the mezcal. A QR code on each bottle links to a video of the mezcalero who made it.
This Espadín is made by maestro Jorge Octavio Cardaz in San Pablo Etla, Oaxaca. Part farmer and part botanist, Jorge combines tradition with science, having built his palenque next to a plant tissue laboratory, and he uses only artisanal methods. The mezcal opens with bright stone fruit and clay, then shows salty earth and oak-forest woodiness on a smooth palate, with a cooling, mineral finish.
The bottle, set in a stitched leather base, makes a beautiful gift.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
