Tequila Cazadores Extra Añejo is the most aged tequila in the Cazadores family, made from 100% highland blue Weber agave and aged at least three years in new American oak barrels, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Born in Los Altos and bottled in its purest form, Cazadores is a proud Mexican tequila from the highland town of Arandas, Jalisco, where every once in a while a majestic stag can be found roaming the fields of blue agave. The highlands' elevation and iron-rich red clay soils yield agave with higher sugar content and fruitier character.
Production starts the day the agave is harvested and includes a two-stage fermentation with a proprietary strain of yeast, followed by double distillation in small pot stills and aging in new American white oak barrels under the eye of maestro tequilero Jesús Susunaga. More than three years in wood give the extra añejo a deep golden color and enrich its agave-forward profile.
Vanilla leads, with notes of cinnamon, roasted apples and nutmeg, and the palate is smooth and velvety, with cooked agave, caramelized fruit, dark chocolate and hints of oak. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering warmth. It earned a Double Gold Medal at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
