Chopin Rye is a single-ingredient Polish vodka distilled entirely from rye at the family-owned Chopin distillery in Krzesk, in Poland's Podlasie region, and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) in a one-liter bottle.
Chopin was one of the first vodkas to make the case that vodka should taste like what it's made from. Instead of chasing neutrality, the distillery makes three single-ingredient vodkas, potato, rye and wheat, each blended with water from the distillery's own well, and the rye was introduced in 2011 alongside the wheat. Of the trio, the rye is the spicy and crisp one.
It carries mild grain-pastry and creamy meringue aromas and flavors over a soft, off-dry, medium body. Very clean and silky, it has a characteristic peppery snap from the rye and a smooth finish of minerals, vanilla taffy and delicate pepper.
Best enjoyed chilled and neat, or in a Martini where its character can show.
Chopin's ingredients are cultivated farm to bottle in Poland's fertile Podlasie countryside and distilled using simple methods handed down through six centuries. The distillery itself dates back to the 19th century and was acquired by the Dorda family in 2003, and its vodkas are distilled four times before being blended with artesian well water.
The one-liter bottle suits a well-stocked home bar.
Its spice also makes it a favorite for savory cocktails.
