Chopin Rye is a single-ingredient Polish vodka distilled entirely from rye at the family-owned Chopin distillery in Krzesk, in Poland's Podlasie region, and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Chopin was one of the first vodkas to make the case that vodka should taste like what it's made from. Instead of chasing neutrality, the distillery makes three single-ingredient vodkas, potato, rye and wheat, each blended with water from the distillery's own well. The rye was introduced in 2011 alongside the wheat, and of the trio it is the spicy, crisp one.
The Chopin distillery, established in 1896, prides itself on crafting single-ingredient vodkas from naturally grown ingredients, without chemicals or pesticides, from the fertile countryside of Podlasie near the distillery. Its rye has even inspired an organic edition made from a heritage rye variety, Dankowskie Ruben, grown on a single farm nearby.
Chopin Rye carries mild grain-pastry and creamy meringue aromas over a soft, off-dry, medium body. Very clean and silky, it has a characteristic peppery snap from the rye and a smooth finish of minerals, vanilla taffy and delicate pepper.
Chopin Rye is precisely composed to showcase the complex, spicy warmth of Polish rye: a particularly expressive vodka with a peppery liveliness, with subtle aromas of rye bread and vibrant crushed black pepper. Best enjoyed chilled and neat, or in a Martini where its character can show. It is also made for savory cocktails, such as the Bloody Magda: Chopin Rye with Bloody Mary mix, a splash of balsamic vinegar and a little simple syrup, served in a salt-rimmed glass with pickled vegetables.
