Clase Azul Tequila Blanco Ahumado is a limited edition joven tequila that bridges traditional blanco tequila and the smoky character usually found in mezcal. Made from 100% Blue Weber agave cooked in underground pit ovens lined with volcanic rock, it is bottled unaged at 45% ABV in a hand-crafted decanter.
Ahumado means smoked, and this release pays homage to the original fire-roasting traditions of agave spirits. Instead of the steam ovens used for most tequila, the agave hearts are roasted over firewood in earthen pits, absorbing a gentle smoke before they are crushed, fermented and distilled.
Clear with silver highlights, it offers smoked agave, plum and red apple on the nose, with fresh herbs and citrus. The palate brings cooked agave and lemon with an earthy, mineral character and a hint of smoke, and light vanilla bean and herbal notes emerge as it opens. The finish is silky and clean, with light smoke and citrus peel. The smoke is subtle and integrated rather than assertive.
The decanter is clear glass with a smoky dark base and a copper-toned stopper, presented in a copper box with flowing flame-like lines. It is a fascinating bottle for Clase Azul collectors and anyone curious about the smokier side of tequila.
As a limited edition, it is a collectable as well as a sipping tequila.
