Cocijo Añejo is an artisanal mezcal made from 100% Espadín agave in Oaxaca, double distilled and aged two years in French oak barrels, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Cocijo makes its mezcal in the traditional Oaxacan style in Santiago Matatlán, the heart of mezcal country: the organic Espadín is roasted in an underground oven and fermented in wooden vats before distillation. Two years in French oak then soften and deepen the spirit, so this añejo pairs the smoky, earthy character of Espadín with warm oak.
Considered a drink of the gods, mezcal has been crafted from generation to generation for more than 400 years. Cocijo celebrates friendship, family and life, and suggests the traditional ritual: a lick of sal de gusano from the back of the hand, a sip, then a bite of orange.
With its rounded bottle and twine-tied neck, it makes a warm gift for mezcal lovers.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
