Compass Box Art & Decadence is a limited-edition blended Scotch whisky released in 2023 and designed with dessert in mind. Bottled at 49% ABV, it is non-chill-filtered and of natural colour, and was limited to around 9,500 bottles.
Compass Box is celebrated for its creative, transparent approach to blending, and Art & Decadence was built from richly cask-influenced whiskies. Balmenach malt was finished separately in three different ex-wine casks, Madeira, Sauternes and Marsala, and forms the heart of the blend at 42%. Glen Moray from Oloroso sherry butts makes up 24%, Linkwood from Palo Cortado sherry butts 14%, and grain whisky from Port Dundas completes it at 20%.
The result is a decadent dram: a rich, aromatic nose of red apple, waxed wood, liquorice, banana custard and toffee leads to a creamy palate of vanilla, golden raisin and apricot, with lingering dark chocolate and oak. Whisky Advocate scored it 94 points, finding caramel, vanilla pod and chocolate cake on the nose, dark chocolate and black cherry on the palate, and a finish of golden caramel, chocolate pudding and espresso.
The ornate teal and gold label and matching box, inspired by fine art and opulence, make it a superb gift.
Serve it neat alongside dessert, or as dessert itself.
