Compass Box The Story of the Spaniard is a blended malt Scotch whisky showcasing whiskies aged in Spanish wine casks, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) with natural color and no chill filtration.
First released in 2018, it was inspired by a bespoke whisky Compass Box created for a New York City bar called The Spaniard, which led the blenders to explore the sherried style further for their permanent range. The name is also a nod to the founder's chance encounter with a man in the south of Spain who introduced him to sherry; years later he rediscovered it through whiskies aged in former sherry casks, a style he has been drawn to ever since. The first batches used not just sherry-seasoned casks but Spanish red wine casks too, a nod to the similarities between whiskymaking and winemaking. It is released in batches.
Expect notes of citrus peel, red wine and spices, with a long finish of vanilla panna cotta, berries and cherries.
The illustrated matador label makes it a beautiful gift.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
