Contraluz is the world's first cristalino mezcal: a 100% agave mezcal artesanal from Oaxaca, rested in American oak barrels and then filtered through activated charcoal to a crystal-clear finish, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) in a 700ml bottle.
Born in 2016, Contraluz paves a new path for the mezcal tradition, blending modernity with the cherished essence of the past. It preserves the authentic character of mezcal while adding an innovative final step that extracts the colour, resulting in a mesmerising, transparent appearance. Recent releases rest about six months in charred American oak before filtration, while early releases were aged more than twelve months.
The result is balanced, crystalline and bright, full of personality: rich notes of vanilla and caramel balanced with light oak, the natural smokiness of mezcal adding an intriguing layer, with smoky and citrus aromas and a silky finish.
Presented in its tall, textured bottle, it makes a striking gift and a perfect partner for Mexican cuisine and cocktails.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
