Corralejo 1821 is an extra añejo tequila made from estate-grown 100% blue Weber agave and aged for a full three years in small, second-fill American oak casks that previously held bourbon. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
The name honours 1821, the year Mexico achieved its independence from Spain. Corralejo is made at the historic Hacienda Corralejo in Guanajuato, the birthplace of Miguel Hidalgo, father of Mexican independence, and the 1821 was first released to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in 2017.
Three years in small bourbon casks give it an amber colour with copper hints. The nose brings sweet cooked agave accented by cinnamon, pepper and clove, with coffee, walnut, apple and green pineapple, and the palate offers smoke and oak with walnut, almond, vanilla and cooked agave.
The tall, slender bottle with its gold seal is an elegant gift for tequila lovers.
Sip it neat from a snifter to enjoy its spice and nuttiness.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
